Singapore recorded “Extreme” for Ultra-violet Index (UVI) and what does it mean?

As one of the few countries with the highest UVIMeteorological Service Singapore (MSS) records that the UVI in Singapore is usually at its highest from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm with an index of 13, exceeding the average index of 11.

The Ultraviolet Index (UVI), created by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Environment Programme, and the World Meteorological Organization, is a measure of the strength and level of UV radiation, usually recorded in different points in time throughout the day. With 0-2 being categorised as “Low” to 11+ as “Extreme”, it also serves as a gauge for people to understand and adopt appropriate measures to protect our skin at different point of the day.

With the immense UVI in Singapore, it is then very important that we take necessary precautions to protect and shield our skin against the harmful UV rays, especially those delicate skin of our little ones as it is constantly being highlighted that exposures to UV rays can result in various skin conditions such as premature aging of skin, pigmentations or even increasing the risk of getting skin cancer.

As advised by MSS and Project UVRaydiant, products that provide sun protection like sunscreens should be applied on a daily basis and is also encouraged to be reapplied every 2 hours.
